What is somatics?
Somatics is a field of study that became a recognized in the 1970s (within the Western World) in response to Thomas Hanna’s initiative. Hanna was a movement theorist, philosopher, and educator and coined the term Somatic stemming from the Greek word Soma, meaning ‘the living body in its wholeness’.

Somatic educators and therapists work in a learning environment that supports body-mind connectivity, in relation to one's own personal ‘lived’ experience.

Somatic movement education (and therapy) involves:
-
Working with sensation and recognizing internal sensations
-
Bringing attention to body awareness
-
Movement Patterning (and re-patterning)
-
Discovery of movement habits, as well as personal perceptions and biases
-
Working towards change
-
Co-regulation
-
A Phenomenological/ Philosophical approach to moving (being in the world)
-
Experiential Anatomy
-
Personal Meaning Making (as well as working with imagery)
-
Whole person/ subjective experience
-
Working with both function and expression of bodily movement

Laban/ Bartenieff Movement Studies and Somatics
It is important to note that somatics works with a whole system perspective. Whole systems are organic and act like an eco-system. One could say we are our own eco-system and in order for self as eco-system to be healthy, and integrated, one allows all their 'parts' to work together towards wholeness. Laban/ Bartenieff Movement Studies (also known as LBMS) not only offers a whole system perspective but it also recognizes movement as language and how this movement language can support individuals to better understand and describe their movement patterns. When one can understand their movement patterns (and habits) they can begin to have choice and choice can lead to change, change towards whole body integration, aliveness and connectivity.
